DETAILED ITINERARY: Day 8 -
Wednesday
Lemuel Petlacalco-Lehman, Our Gentle Friend and an LDS Licensed Guide is meeting us this morning. He has boarded the luxury bus from Cancun as it came through Carrio Puerte. Our luggage is loaded just after we have breakfast. A drive to Kohunlich will bring you to the most renowned building at the site, the Pyramid of the Masks. The masks are enormous and depict the facial features of the Mayan Indians. It is like a Hollywood set. We have the opportunity to see how these Olmec masks were created. At the Pyramid of the Masks we will see Earth Works as Described in the Book of Mormon (Alma 49:18, 50 :14). These earth works were very similar to ramparts and walls built in Israel. The site is very well kept and has a peaceful feeling that easily reminds us of the possible Nephite habitation that could have been here. An hour and a half drive brings us Carrio Puerte which is Lemuels hometown. During lunch time, well meet his family and see where the Branch meets. He has six brothers and two sisters all licensed as Mexican guides. Each one has a gentle, warm and testifying spirit. They definitely have a similar speaking manner and demeanor. You are privileged to get a great touch of Mexico and the Nephite / Lamanite heritage from our guides. Their father is German (Lehman) and their mother is Mayan (Petlacalco). It is a pleasure to sense how very closely they are connected to the land and committed to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The drive northward brings us to Tulum. Youll be surprised to see a Mayan, Book of Mormon like Setting Perched as a Light House on the Shore. Tulum was built as a fortress city over looking the Caribbean. The important structures here include the Castillo, a former temple and the Temple of the Frescos with 13th Century wall paintings. We try to get there later in the afternoon when the cruise ship patrons are heading back to their ships. This is the "Garden Tomb" of Book of Mormon Lands for us. Here we find a depiction of a woman (a very definite Virgin Mary) giving birth to an "upside down" God. At the Temple of the Frescos, we see a depiction of "laying on of hands" on one of the frescos. You will see hands that are symbolically giving a blessing. The highlight is to see a three-panel series on the three tiered temple. The Center Panel Shows an Upright God, (Lemuel gently testifies of God the Father). The Left Hand Side Depicts an Upside down God, (Lemuel again suggests the imagery of the Son of God, coming down to earth). The Third Panel Is Blank, (Lemuel simply says, it could represent the Holy Ghost, because he has no body). As the sun begins to settle and people begin to leave the tourist site, we take some quiet time to read 3rd Nephi and clearly visualize the Father announcing his Son, Jesus, whom he has sent down to minister and teach his gospel. It is a Beautiful Spiritual Highpoint of our tour. We leave Tulum, also having met more of the Petlacalco brothers, including Helaman who will be our guide tomorrow. We drive for an hour to the magnificent and famous site of Chichen Itza, our final touring experience tomorrow. Tonight, however, we will enjoy the night at the Mayaland Hotel at the Entrance to Chichen Itza. |
